What's the Weight Difference Between an E Bike and a Standard Bike? The Answer Will SHOCK You!

What's the weight difference between a standard bike and an electric bike?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today we're going to find out what the weight difference is between a standard bike and an electric bike. All right, so right here I have our EvryJourney standard bike and our EvryJourney 500-watt e-bike. They both have seven-speed derailleurs, they both have the same shifter and brakes, and everything's the same except this one is an e-bike. Now the colors are different as well, the tire color is different, but the tires are the same. Now this one has a 500-watt rear hub motor and a 10.4 amp hour battery. Also, we have the display up here.

So we're going to weigh these to see the difference in weight between the standard version and the e-bike version. Now this isn't going to be true for all e-bikes, but it's going to give you a general idea of how much all of the electrical elements add to a bike in terms of weight. I'm going to bring in Colton right now to be my helper. Now we've already pre-weighed Colton, we have our scale right here. We've already pre-weighed Colton, he's 188 pounds and he's going to get on the scale and take our first bike. We're going to take the weight of him and the bike minus his body weight to see how much these bikes weigh. All right, Colton, ready? For the first one, we'll go with the regular bike. I'm going to get my calculator out here so I can do some quick math to calculate. Okay, we're going to give him the lightest one first. 224 even we're going to go with, minus 188, 36 pounds on the EvryJourney 7-speed. This is an alloy frame, feels pretty light, doesn't it? 36 pounds, so that's pretty easy and light. All right, now go ahead and, take your guesses as to how much you think the e-bike version weighs, and see if you can get close to what the actual difference is going to be.

All right, Colton, now we're going to weigh it with the battery and then we'll give you an idea of how much it weighs without the battery as well. Okay, he's up 249. 249 minus 188, 61 pounds. Now we weighed it in a different video and it was about a pound heavier, 62 pounds, right? So, you know, the scale isn't going to be exact every time. So I'm going to say 62 pounds. So the regular bike came in at 36 pounds, so minus 62, that's a 26-pound difference between the e-bike and the regular bike. So it's substantial. I mean, that is 26 divided by 36. 26 divided by 36 is a 72 percent increase, right? Yes. So it's a 72 percent increase over the regular bike weight. So not quite double, but 72 percent increase. So now the battery weighs eight pounds. So if you take 62 minus eight, now the total weight of the e-bike is 54 pounds minus 36.

You got an 18-pound difference. And I bring that up because when you're loading and unloading, you can easily take off the battery. You can also easily take off the seat, which is two pounds. Now that's not going to create a greater difference because you could take off the seat on both, but it's going to reduce the weight of the e-bike. So in general, then it looks like it's adding 26 pounds. That's going to vary based on what type of e-bike you have. We just did another video weighing different e-bikes and bigger motors, bigger batteries mean increased weight. So we had e-bikes in the 66, and 67 range and there are other e-bikes out there that are going to be heavier.

If they have fat tires on a 26-inch, if they have a 750-watt motor, if they have 14, 15, 21 amp hour batteries, you're talking about 70 pounds plus on that e-bike. So think about what you want in terms of weight. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.com, or call us at 310-982-2877. You can also find both of these bikes linked in the description below. And the Evryjourney is one of the lighter e-bikes out there. We've got some other lightweight ones.
