Our seventy-year-old senior woman's gonna test-ride e-bikes and tell us which one is her favorite. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, I'm joined by Teresa, who's 70 years old, and she is going to test out some e-bikes and tell us which one is her favorite.
Dustin: All right, Teresa, so you do a lot of bike riding? Like daily, or weekly?
Teresa: Weekly, and I've been biking my whole life.
Dustin: Your whole life, okay? And you said you've ridden an e-bike on your grandson's e-bike? Multiple times, one time?
Teresa: Just when I see him, yeah, a few times.
Dustin: Okay, okay. Do you like it? Is it fun?
Teresa: Yeah, it's a bit to get used to, but yes, it's a lot of fun.
Dustin: Cool. All right. Well, we've got five different e-bike models here that we find are good for seniors in different capacities. So we're going to have you test ride each one and then you can give us our feedback and then ultimately I'll have you choose which one you like the best.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: And how tall are you?
Teresa: I'm 5'3".
Dustin: 5'3". Okay. So here's our first one. This is the EvryJourney.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: And this has a forward-pedaling design. I've got the seat down. So try that and see how that feels. This is a 500-watt rear hub motor. So it's a 500-watt top speed of 20 miles an hour can get a range of 50 miles on a single charge. You turn it on right here. And you have five levels of assistance. I'm going to put it in zero. When it's in zero, nothing happens. So this is a throttle, like on the tricycle you rode. You can push this if you want, or you can just pedal. And if you do this, you just really, don't want to be jerky with it. You just want to be easy and find the difference…
Teresa: So I have to find this?
Dustin: You don't have to use that at all.
Teresa: I could do this.
Dustin: Yes.
Teresa: Where is it? I could put it in a gear.
Dustin: Yeah, and when you pedal... It'll assist you. Now. This is just the assistance level. And put in zero as we sit here.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: These are just the assistance levels for the motor. The gears for the bike are right here. So you can also shift the gears of the bike.
Teresa: Awesome.
Dustin: And this is it's a twisty throttle. It's a twist shift. So you would twist it up to shift up and down to shift out don't do it while you’re, you gotta be moving to shift.
Teresa: Okay. Alrighty.
Dustin: But yeah.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: So you can go ahead and put your kickstand up. There you go. And you can give it a rip.
Teresa: okay.
Dustin: Is it in one?
Teresa: Oh. I think it's in three. I don't know, I'm not sure.
Dustin: Are you feeling assistance?
Teresa: It says four right here. I don't know what this is.
Dustin: Let me take it. It doesn't seem like you're getting any assistance. Oh, you're in zero. That's your miles per hour.
Teresa: Oh, okay.
Dustin: So there, yeah. Okay.
Teresa: All right. Here we go. And where should I ride to?
Dustin: You can make a big lap around the building.
Teresa: Okay. All righty. Whoa. Okay, this is more like a bike.
Dustin: Okay. What do you think?
Teresa: It's really nice.
Dustin: Did you try the throttle at all or not?
Teresa: No, it's comfortable. So, it's a comfortable bike.
Dustin: Yeah, for the short-range riding too, it's good to put that into zero so you don't get the acceleration
Teresa: Uh-huh.
Dustin: Because it's a little bit harder to control the…
Teresa: Yeah, but it's more the shape of a regular bike and so I'm kind of used to how it feels it was, it was good.
Dustin: So did it feel comfortable?
Teresa: Now, the throttle, you said because it's hard to, like when you hold it down, you have to hold it at a certain one. You can't like, so, but if you're on the bike, you accidentally go like this, you're going faster, right?
Dustin: Yeah, it's like a gas pedal in a car. You have to find the place that you want to, exactly. That's why you can't jerk it. You want to be here or here or here.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: Yeah, maybe you'll get the hang of it as we move along.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: So this one is more like a classic cruiser. This is our Around the block. Everything else is going to be the same. It's just kind of a different riding position.
So I'll put the seat down. Let's see. I don't know if that, see if that, how that works. If you can get your leg over and sit on it. Okay. There you go.
Teresa: Oh yeah.
Dustin: Oh, you know what actually? Let me see something here. The chain is off. I can fix that while you're on there though. Hold on a second. Okay, good to go. Okay. So you just hold this power button down right here and it'll turn on. Hold it down for, yeah. There you go. Okay, don't hit the throttle till you're ready to go. So if you're ready, you can do it. Did you get the hang of it a little more that time?
Teresa: Yeah, it was great. It was great. I love that one. I think I like the other one seemed to be a little bit smoother.
Dustin: Okay. So, so far that's your preference?
Teresa: Uhum.
Dustin: Okay. All right, now this one, our Simple Step-Thru. So this one is similar to the first one, but it's got a, now the seat is a little bit higher. So see if you can, if that's okay for you or if it's too high.
Teresa: Yeah, it's okay. It's on. And... Okay. Oh, it's very high. Yeah, I see what you mean. Is this going to go up? Is that going to?
Dustin: I’ll help you with the kickstand.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: There you go.
Teresa: Okay. Yeah.
Dustin: How'd you like this one?
Teresa: I like it. It's a little high for me, but yeah, I like it. It's smooth.
Dustin: The lower step through on a future one, we're going to lower the seat a little bit to make it easier. So you have a nice step through here. Okay.
Teresa: Mm-hmm.
Dustin: Moving on now. So this is our Simple Step-Thru. So Evryjourney, Around the block, a Simple Step-Thru. Now, this is the Simple Step-Thru 20 inches. So this one's going to be a little bit easier for you to get on and off.
Teresa: Okay. It's like a stingray. Kind of.
Dustin: Yeah, kind of. Okay. See how that feels. Lower the handlebars down. Got the automatic handlebar adjusting here. Quick. Okay.
Teresa: And…
Dustin: I can raise the seat if that's too low.
Teresa: I think that's okay.
Dustin: Okay. Now, if you're going to do throttle, just really ease into it. I recommend you do the pedaling on this one to start.
Teresa: All right. So it's on one.
Dustin: It's on two, so hit the down, yeah, there you go.
Teresa: Okay. Alrighty then.
Dustin: Oh, you know what, it's…
Teresa: Huh? Oh, is it okay?
Dustin: Well, I just need to shift the gears. It's stuck in between two gears.
Teresa: Oh, here. So, there, now it's fine. Okay, I'm gonna turn around. So Okay.
Dustin: How's that one?
Teresa: It's good. The first one I rode is still my favorite. Here we go.
Dustin: Yeah, when you get close, sometimes it's good to shift this down to zero.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: That way you just turn off the motor.
Teresa: Yeah.
Dustin: Okay, so still the first one's your favorite.
Teresa: Uh-huh.
Dustin: All right. Okay, we got one more. I think this one, I'm not going to have you ride because that one's got 750 watts of power.
Teresa: Yeah.
Dustin: And that's powerful.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: So I think the 500 seems to be more than enough for you.
Teresa: This is my favorite color, though.
Dustin: The black?
Teresa: How it looks. No, the stripes right here and the orange.
Dustin: Oh, okay.
Teresa: Yeah, that's my favorite color, but I'll see if I like it. Let's see. So here.
Dustin: Yeah, I think it's going to be a little too big for you, though. But you want to try it. This one's more powerful.
Teresa: Oh.
Dustin: You can try it here. I'll just…
Teresa: I'll just ride it like one.
Dustin: Yeah, keep it at zero while you're getting on.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: And then let me put the seat down all the way. Because it may be.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: So this one's a little bit different in that this is a twist throttle. So if you twist it, it'll go without pedaling versus that thumb throttle.
Teresa: Okay. So twist it. What? Say that again. Oh, this. Okay. Yes.
Dustin: It's turned off right now.
Teresa: Got it. Yes. No. Okay. Good to know. Let's see.
Dustin: Yeah, the seats are a little higher on this one.
Teresa: Looks like it's too big for me. But yeah, it is too big for me. So.
Dustin: Okay.
Teresa: Yeah, it doesn't I mean I could but it's kind of up there.
Dustin: Yeah, I think we stay away from it. Yeah Okay, let's try this one. This is called the Relaxed Body. This one's kind of a whole different feel.
Teresa: Mm-hmm.
Dustin: So sit down on there and try it and…
Teresa: Oh yeah, this is nice.
Dustin: Okay, so let's hit the button. I'll put the kickstand up for you. It's way back here.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: Let's see. There you go.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: Okay, so you're in zero, so make sure you put it in one. There you go.
Teresa: There it is. Oh, this is my favorite. This is definitely. This is the most comfortable.
Dustin: Yeah.
Teresa: Oh, yeah. So nice. So comfortable.
Dustin: Okay, well now you have to make the difficult decision of choosing your absolute favorite.
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: Let me grab it.
Teresa: Yes. Okay.
Dustin: So which one?
Teresa: Okay.
Dustin: Still this one?
Teresa: First I thought it was gonna be this one until I got on this.
Dustin: So you like, it's called the relax?
Teresa: Yeah.
Dustin: Oh, you like this one?
Teresa: Yes, because it's, is this the last one I was on?
Dustin: You were on this one.
Teresa: This is the last one I was on?
Dustin: Uh-huh.
Teresa: Okay, sorry. Yeah, I just felt like I had complete control.
Dustin: Mm-hmm, okay.
Teresa: And the comfort was there, and it's just such a smooth ride, and it just seems comfortable. Easy to control.
Dustin: Cool. Yeah, this one's a little different. It's got the forward pedaling. So you're pedaling a little more out in front of your body. We call a semi-recumbent, you know, like a recumbent bike at the gym where you're pedaling out. So it's not fully out, but a little bit. And the bars come into your body, which are, like, really adjustable. So, yeah, you can find, like, a nice, comfortable riding position.
Teresa: Yeah.
Dustin: And I agree. You have good control with the bars right there and..
Teresa: This one I thought, because it's lower and I'm short and I thought, but this, I felt like I had the most control and comfort in this bike.
Dustin: Awesome. Cool. All right well Teresa chose the relax, chose the Relaxed Body. She also loved the Evryjourney and the Simple Step-Thru 20 inch were your top three picks.
Teresa: And that is an awesome color right there, but it's too big for me.
Dustin: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Teresa: It was too big.
Dustin: Cool. Well, we could maybe, in the future, we'll put that on one of these bikes.
