With or Without Pedaling an Electric Bike - The Choice is Yours

Hey guys, Dustin here, CEO of Sixthreezero e-bike and bike company. Today, we're going to answer the question. Can you ride an electric bike without peddling? Stick around. All right. So today we're going to answer the question, can you ride an electric bike without pedaling? We give away accessories, bikes, and e-bikes, you'll want to know about it. Hit subscribe. All right, so let's answer the question, can electric bikes be written without pedaling? The answer to that is it depends on the classification of the e-bike.

Some e-bikes come with throttles, like the e-bikes that we make here at Sixthreezero. You actually have the option to do full-throttle on the e-bike, meaning, you do not have to pedal at all. Now, that is not true of all e-bikes. Some e-bikes are just pedal assist, meaning, you have to pedal for the motor to actually kick in. In those cases, if they don't come with a throttle, there will literally be no way to engage the motor at all other than pedaling. So in the case of those e-bikes, you cannot ride them without pedaling. Now, to answer the broad question, can you ride an electric bike without pedaling? The answer is some, and those types of e-bikes are like the ones that we produce. And these e-bikes typically will have a throttle, either a twist throttle or a thumb throttle in addition to having the pedal-assist portion.

Another question is how fast does an electric bike go if you are not pedaling. Well, that depends on the motor size you have on your electric bike. There are a few different sizes of motors on electric bikes 250w, 500w, and 750w. All will actually be capped at a top speed of 20mph because that is the maximum allowed speed limit for an ebike on the road. But a 250w will even struggle to get to 20mph without pedaling. A 500 watt motor and a 750 watt motor will easily get to 20mph by using just the throttle. So the choice is your, you don't need to need an electric bike and you can still go up to 20mph. Now the one thing is to consider a bike an electric bike it must have pedals. If it just has a motor and no pedals, well then for all intensive purposes it just a moped. A moped will not be afforded the same luxuries as an electric bike.

Now the other question, can you just pedal an electric bike? The answer is yes, in fact you can just pedal an electric bike without even turning the motor on. A good option is if you want to get some exercise remove your battery and leave it at home. This way you can reduce the weight of the bike and make it easier to pedal without the electric assist turned on. So pedal away for as many miles as you please. Most riders won't even notice between pedaling an ebike without the motor on and pedaling a regular bike. At least on flat ground. If you decide to pedal your ebike uphill without the motor on you will definitely notice the difference. I wouldn't ever recommend taking your electric bike up hill without turning the motor on. But you can do it, and you'll definitely get a good work out in.

Also if you plan to pedal your electric bike without using the motor I recommend getting an e bicycle that has at least seven speeds. This will make pedaling much easier because you'll have a range of gears to choose from. If the bike is just a single speed it's going to make pedaling very difficult and probably not too enjoyable for long distances. With at least seven speeds you can change gears as you change terrain. If you are going up hill you can shift to first gear or if you are flat ground you can cruise in four, five, six or seventh gear.

Factors To Consider While Purchasing an Ebike

Now the time has come for you to go through the factors which you must consider while purchasing an Ebike. So, the following section will help you out with the same.

  1. Understand the Type of Motor. An electric motor is the fundamental aspect that makes the ebike different from traditional bikes. There are 2 different types of motors - Hub Motors and Mid-Drive Motors. Located on the front or backside, Hub Motor is often cheaper and helps in balanced rides. On the other hand, Mid-Drive Motors are connected on the bike’s cranks and equally distribute the weight and efficiency. Hence, it’s a great choice for your cycling requirements.
  2. Consider Battery Range and Life. The distance your ebike can cover depends on its battery’s range and life. Due to this, you just need to remember that with a wider range and longer life, the battery can assist you in covering longer distances as well as have a long life. Apart from this, better battery range and life will help you to ride through difficult terrains as well.

Understanding these factors will help you to purchase the best Ebike that suits all your riding requirements.

Pedal Your EBike if You Choose

So you would have the option to pedal if you'd like to, and the motor can give you assistance, or you can turn the motor off and just pedal the bike, or you can just do the throttle, don't peddle it all and the e-bike will take you. And generally, with those though, you're limited to no more than 20 miles an hour with the full throttle. So with the pedal assist, you can go up to 28 with the full throttle, you can not go more than 20 miles an hour on an e-bike without peddling at all. And actually, we have a video where I take an e-bike on a 21-mile journey, I do not peddle one bit. I just use the throttle. You can look that up on our YouTube channel. I believe it's How Far Will An E-Bike Go Without Pedaling?

Yes, You Can Ride an Electric Bike Without Pedaling

And so, we actually see how long can we go on the e-bike without pedaling and I go through PCH on the coast and I go through Laguna Beach. It's pretty cool. Just throttle.
