Can you ride your e-bike in the rain? Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today we're gonna answer the question, can you ride your e-bike in the rain? All right, we're in San Clemente, California. We've got a really rainy day out here, which is kind of exciting and good for us here, and a good day to test the theory of Can you ride your e-bike in the rain? Now, I've got all of our e-bikes and e-trikes in here a little bit cramped with the rainy weather, and the answer to the question is yes, you can ride your e-bike in the rain, but... I would recommend a few preparations if you are gonna go out in the rain or you think you could get caught in the rain. Now, I had some, ah, I do right here, okay. So, really depends on your type of e-bike. Now most things are contained in cables and inside the frame, so there you know, not a huge risk of water getting in there, but I'm gonna show you some places where you may want to just take some additional electrical tape or a little plastic bag or something to cover a few things. So let's start right here on your display. Now, depending on what your display looks like, you could get a little bag like that and pull that over. I would cut a little slip back here, and then that would as beautifully as it could be done. But I would just take this like so and that would allow that to slip over the front like that and from there you could use your electrical tape to tape that on. So that's a good first step. Now, another important step is your connections in the handlebars here. So a lot of the cables will run through something to conceal it. In our e-bikes, we leave the connections exposed. So in case you have something wrong you can see right here, you have these connections plugged in, and these are not gonna be watertight . So my absolute suggestion here would be to take some electrical tape and quite honestly, this isn't even a bad idea just normal. Because having these connections tight, I mean, you never want these to come off. So you could just throw some electrical tape right on here and the good thing about electrical tape is that the adhesive is pretty forgiving. Now I would do a much better job on that. You could tape that up and just keep those watertight. Okay, now, a few other places, are a little bit cramped in here.
But one thing I'm gonna show you, so also depending on where your battery is located, okay, there's going to be possibly some seams where water could get in. As an example, on our EVRYjourney, where the battery connects in the rear here, on the top, you have the point at which your battery enters the controller. And that is gonna be facing upward, which is directly exposed to the rain. So I would also take a little piece of electrical tape and I would throw that right on top just to go ahead and seal that to prevent any moisture from getting into that battery connection because that would be really, really bad. The other option is the same kind of thing as the display. Throw a plastic bag on there and just prevent that water from coming straight down in. E-bikes that are a little more protected. You may not have to worry about it as much. But even if you have an e-bike with the battery on the top of the frame, I would use some of this to seal the edges. Now with a battery that's connected like this, this is gonna be a lot tighter to the frame. But if you wanted to be safe, you could go ahead and throw a piece of electrical tape right along the edge. Where the battery connects to the frame like that. Again, it's just gonna help seal it off and prevent water. So those are the major places to prep. Also, you'll wanna look under the frame. A lot of times there are two wires connecting down below under the frame. Again, for any connection that's exposed, throw some electrical tape on there as well. All right. Now, I'm going to get myself prepped, and I'm going to go out in the pouring rain here and just do a quick ride around, and I'll demonstrate how it works. Okay, we're out here in the rain. Got my windbreaker on and my helmet and I got my screen all wrapped up in my plastic. My cables are all protected and we're ready to rock. So, I mean, obviously not ideal conditions out here, but again, if you want to do it, Just want to make sure, ooh, brakes are a little wet but kind of fun in a way.
Just make sure you've got some good water-resistant clothing. So yeah, I feel good about our protections. You know, I don't think many people are going to go out riding in the rain when it's like this, but if you feel like there's a chance of rain, especially in the summer, you live somewhere in high humidity, might just be a good idea to take some of those precautions that I laid out.
