Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today we're going to answer the question, do beach cruiser bikes have gears? All right. Let's say that you are in the market for a beach cruiser bike and you're not sure how many speeds you need or how many gears you need. Well, let's answer that question today. Right in front of me, I have the EVRYJourney 7-speed beach cruiser hybrid bicycle.

This is one version of a cruiser. Cruisers can mean a lot of things these days. this is a seven-speed version if you want to check more out about this, it's linked in the description below. So, traditionally, I'll say back in the 40s and 50s when cruisers became popular, they started really as a single speed. And I would say if you go to the beaches today, you would see a fair amount of people riding beach cruisers on single-speed bikes. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't get cruisers and speeds. Actually, at sixthreezero, we make our beach cruisers in single-speed, three-speed, seven-speed, and also 21-speed versions. The reason is, you know, back when cruisers became popular, mountain bikes came out in the 70s, and mountain bikes or 10-speed bikes, road bikes, actually road bikes, gears became associated more with road bikes and 10-speed bikes.

And cruisers kind of stayed as single-speed bikes. As things have evolved now from the 90s into the 2000s, cruisers can have any gear configuration. Well, I take that back. Not any, but most gear configurations that you could ever want. You can find a single speed. You can find a three-speed. You can find a seven-speed. You can find a 21-speed. As I said, the EVRYJourney right here is a seven-speed. It also doesn't have a coaster brake. This has actual caliper front and rear brakes. So it's built like... a hybrid bike in that it's got the brakes, it's got the seven speeds, but it's got the look and the design of a cruiser. That's why the word hybrid bike was created, because it encapsulates, you know, these bikes now that are taking features from different categories of bike where, like I said, you've got the frame design of a cruiser, but you've got the gears now that traditionally weren't on cruisers.

You barely see it. A lot of times on a three-speed, you're going to see a coaster rear brake with a front handbrake as well. So that option exists also. So you can get beach cruisers at any speed that you want, usually 1 3 7 or 21. You're not going to see a lot of 10 or 14 or 18. Like I said, 1 3 7 are going to be the most common.
