ETrikes for Heavy People: Overweight People Ride & Review Electric Tricycles: What Do They Choose?

How to find the perfect electric trike as a heavier person. Hey everyone I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. And today we're going to show you how to find the best e-trike if you are a heavier rider. Now I've got Lexi with me. And Adam with me, and they're going to test-ride all these electric tricycles and choose their favorite. All right, Lexi is 5'1", 230 pounds, and Adam is 5'10", 315 pounds. We're going to have them test out all these e-trikes. And then they're going to choose their favorite. And then we're going to do a little demo ride of them on their favorite up a hill and around the neighborhood right here. Now, I was just talking to Lexi.

Dustin: Adam, you have ridden an electric tricycle before.

Adam: Yes.

Dustin: Lexi has not. So let's start on the left to right and we'll move down to our bigger trikes at the end. So on the left here, we have... This is our Reverse trike. Yeah. So this one is going to ride... more like a two-wheel bike now you've got the two wheels in front, but they tilt. So it's got very precision steering it's fun. So Lexi why don't you come on here and go first? This one is just going to feel like a regular bike. So, um, see if that seat's too high or if that's okay.

Lexi: Sorry.

Dustin: A little too high.

Lexi: A little bit.

Dustin: I can lower it down just a touch.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: Let's bring that down.

Lexi: Thank you.

Dustin: Okay. I can bring this down just a touch as well. Okay, try that.

Lexi: Cool.

Dustin: Better?

Lexi: Yeah, a lot. Thank you.

Dustin: All right. So everything is the same as an e-bike. Now they just rode e-bikes as well. So this is a 750-watt rear hub. So pretty powerful. Same thing, you have the pedal assist. So this can handle heavier riders with 750 watts of power. Okay, so you're ready to go. You have it in level one. Your kickstand is up.

Lexi: Okay, cool.

Dustin: This is a new model since the last time you've been here.

Adam: Yeah, I don't remember that.

Lexi: That was a lot of fun. That was super simple.

Dustin: Yeah.

Lexi: And easy to maneuver.

Dustin: Yeah. How was the steering? Is it, it's crazy how you can take very tight turns.

Lexi: Yeah, definitely.

Dustin: Did it take a little getting used to?

Lexi: I was a little scared to turn it first, but it was extremely easy and comfortable too.

Dustin: Yeah. You have to just trust it, right? Kind of like getting used to it. Okay, cool.

Lexi: Thank you.

Dustin: All right, Adam, you're up. Let me go ahead and just raise this for you a little bit. Okay. Sorry. All right. Nice. Go ahead and give that a shot.

Adam: And it's all just finger tight you don't have to make any you know you don't need a tool to make any adjustments.

Dustin: Yep.

Adam: Which I like.

Dustin: All right, let's go.

Lexi: I like that the tires lean with it too.

Dustin: Yeah.

Lexi: That's cool. I haven't seen anything like that.

Dustin: Yeah.

Adam: So incredibly maneuverable.

Dustin: Yeah. Crazy, right?

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: And how is the power and acceleration?

Adam: Great. Very good power. Very good acceleration.

Dustin: It's almost tighter steering than a regular bike, right?

Adam: Almost. Yeah. But like still supported and like, you know.

Dustin: Yeah.

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: Cool. All right. Well, this is the reverse trike. Now, this is our Evryjourney 250-watt trike. So if you want to come over, Lexi, I'll get you on first. Now, Adam's ridden this one before.

Adam: Yep.

Lexi: Cool.

Dustin: So go ahead and get on. There you go. Okay, so this one all right, so on a tricycle, oh you don't you can put your feet on the pedals. You don't have to have your feet down.

Lexi: that's cool.

Dustin: Yeah.

Lexi: I just have it from being on a two-wheel bike.

Dustin: Now, on a tricycle, you have to steer the handlebars. Leaning won't do anything, so it may take you a little getting used to. It's the first time she's ever been on a three-wheel bike. If you've watched our videos before, you know a lot of people have some adjusting. Some people don't. They get it right away, but I just want to kind of forewarn you. Now this is a 250-watt, so it's actually the least powerful that you've ridden today. So we'll see how you feel about the responsiveness. So whenever you're ready, you can go for it. I'm going to monitor you just to. So yeah.

Lexi: Yeah, I see what you're saying.

Dustin: You have to turn the handlebars. Let me put it into zero here. Okay, so start pedaling. Yep, turn, turn, turn. There you go.

Lexi: Yeah, sorry. Woo. Okay.

Dustin: So yeah, you have to turn.

Lexi: Completely like that?

Dustin: Yeah, and actually.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: Yep, yep, yep. So when you're ready, you can push that up button and put it into electric if you want.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: And get ready on the brakes in case you need them.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: Yep, turn, turn, turn, turn.

Lexi: There you go. It's always a learning curve, but they usually will figure it out within the first 5-10 minutes.

Lexi: Got the hang of it after I got a little bit further down the street.

Dustin: Yeah? Yeah, it just takes a little getting used to.

Lexi: Yeah, but it's a lot of fun.

Dustin: Did you use the throttle at all?

Lexi: I did.

Dustin: Okay.

Lexi: I put it all the way down too.

Dustin: All right.

Lexi: But that was super duper fun.

Dustin: Yeah, a lot different than. I'm gonna go ahead and take this off right here. A lot different, right, than a two-wheel bike.

Lexi: Yeah, definitely.

Dustin: All right, Adam, I don't know if you want to leave the seat there raise it.

Adam: Yeah, that's great. All right. Let's give it a go. Hello, old friend.

Dustin: And then this one, if you want more throttle, put it up higher.

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: All right.

Adam: Awesome.

Dustin: How was it getting used to a tricycle again?

Adam: It's like riding a trike. Wait, no, that's not the thing. No, it was great.

Dustin: Was the throttle okay? Power okay?

Adam: Like you said, it took a little, like I had to get it up into two and three at some point. Otherwise, it was great.

Dustin: Okay. All right. Let's keep moving on. All right. So this one is even more unique. So this is like a recumbent each trike. So you want to sit down, Lexi?

Lexi: Cool.

Dustin: Make sure the batteries are all turned on for you. So this is the Simple Glide 500-watt. Go ahead and sit down. And let's turn the power on right here. OK, so can you reach the pedals okay?

Lexi: Yeah, perfectly.

Dustin: Okay. So go ahead. So this one's a twist throttle. So you're going to twist this way if you want to go. You can put it in one. Now, the other cool thing is, check this out. Now, twist the... Or actually, you have the parking brakes. Let's pull that out. So go ahead and twist the throttle. It has reverse.

Lexi: Reverse. That's cool.

Dustin: All right. So, yeah, this one's comfortable. You've got this nice seat right here. And, yeah, you can pedal or use the throttle.

Lexi: Cool.

Adam: I haven't even tried it, and I think that one's going to be my favorite.

Dustin: Well, you can take off when you do the twist throttle. What did you think?

Lexi: I like this one a lot better. It's a lot like…

Dustin: Feel more stable? Yeah.

Lexi: Probably because it's a little bit smaller.

Dustin: Did you pedal at all?

Lexi: Yeah, I did.

Dustin: You like the throttle though, huh?

Lexi: Yeah, I feel like with that one, it's a little bit easier to just kind of... To like maneuver. I don't know how else to…

Dustin: This one?

Lexi: Yeah.

Dustin: Yeah?

Lexi: At least for me, I don't know if it's because it's a little bit like…

Dustin: No, yeah, that's cool. It's got a longer frame, so it's a little lower to the ground. So yeah, it's got the raked-out fork. So I think stability-wise, it feels, you know, pretty stable.

Lexi: Yeah, definitely.

Dustin: All right. So Adam, let's see what you think of this one.

Adam: Let's see. All right. Very cool.

Dustin: How does that feel pedal position-wise?

Adam: Yeah, that feels good.

Dustin: Okay.

Adam: All right. Room, room. Oh, that is super comfy.

Dustin: It's a lot of fun, isn't it?

Lexi: It is.

Dustin: I can tell already you enjoyed that.

Adam: That was the most comfortable ride I have ever had.

Dustin: Love to hear it.

Adam: Any sort of vehicle.

Dustin: And accelerated good?

Adam: Oh yeah, 100%. It was great. I don't want to go.

Dustin: Did you feel stable on that too?

Adam: So stable. I was like going around turns like crazy. It was great. Yeah.

Dustin: Cool.

Adam: Super stable.

Dustin: Awesome. All right. Now we're moving on to the EZ Transit, which is foldable. A little bit different. I have a feeling you guys are going to be judging the comfort fully against this one right here. This one's a little more practical for pedaling. So go ahead and hop on Lexi, and see if that's okay height-wise.

Adam: See, with this one, you could put a puppy in the back.

Dustin: That's true.

Lexi: Yes, that's what I was looking at earlier. I love puppies, so I could put like two back there.

Dustin: Yeah.

Lexi: Put one up here.

Dustin: Puppy in the front, puppy in the back.

Lexi: Literally.

Dustin: All right, so this is a 750-watt as well. So it's a front hub motor. You have the reverse on this one too, which is cool.

Lexi: Oh, cool.

Dustin: Everything else is the same. You've got your up-and-down pedal assists. Yeah. So whenever, and now the throttle is a thumb throttle. So you may want to just use that to help you get moving.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: There you go.

Lexi: Bye.

Dustin: Everyone's instinct is to zoom out of here and I get nervous when we get around the cars. All right, what do you think?

Lexi: It's a lot of fun.

Dustin: Was that one easy to steer for you?

Lexi: It's a little bit more difficult than that one.

Dustin: Then this one?

Lexi: Uh-huh. But it's still really fun.

Dustin: The other thing too is, you know, the seat can be changed on any of these. So you could always put that bigger seat like on the e-bike on this one.

Lexi: Oh, that's so cool.

Dustin: So, yeah, the Super Max Cush, so.

Lexi: Nice.

Dustin: All right. Give it a shot there, Adam. Let's see. Get you the seat up here a little bit. Just a little, yeah.

Adam: A little further down.

Dustin: Down?

Adam: Yeah, that's good. Right there.

Dustin: Okay. All right.

Adam: Nice. Again, love that step through. All right, here we go.

Dustin: All right, what do you think?

Adam: Awesome, this is great. I mean, not as comfortable as the other one, but like still, I mean, it's super comfy.

Dustin: How'd you feel about the steering and power?

Adam: Handles great, good power. Again, I hardly pedaled at all. I was able to do it all. Do it all at the level one assist. Like I didn't have to go to another level at all.

Dustin: Okay, cool.

Adam: Super great. And very handy to have all the storage. Yeah.

Dustin: All right. Now we're moving into our big doggers. These are our fat tire trikes. So let's see. Okay, so let's see. So this is the Simple Step-Thru fat tire etrike. So come on over, Lexi. Now, this one is also 750 watts, a front hub motor. Go ahead and get on. It's got the twist throttle as well again.

Lexi: Oh cool.

Dustin: And yeah it's a little bigger. I'll be curious how you guys like the fatter tires.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: And yeah you're in level one, so you can twist the throttle if you want to get going.

Lexi: Cool. I like this one. I like the feel of the beach cruiser style body type and like…

Dustin: Did you feel stable too?

Lexi: Yeah.

Dustin: With the fatter tires?

Lexi: Definitely.

Dustin: And you like the comfortable riding position?

Lexi: Yes. Honestly, I love everything about it. Like being someone who has never ridden a trike before... This is something that I'd feel more comfortable with rather than thinner tires.

Dustin: Got it.

Lexi: It feels a little bit more stable.

Dustin: Yeah. Fair, fair statement. All right, Adam, you're up. Easy step through.

Adam: Yep. Super easy. Oh, that's awesome. Yep. That's got some power. Yep. And it's just in number one. See how tight I can take that turn. Handles are super easy.

Dustin: I saw you taking those turns at a good clip there.

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: What do you think?

Adam: Like, so super stable.

Dustin: Uh-huh.

Adam: Just like, incredible.

Dustin: How do you compare? So, so far of all of them, what is, what's your favorite one?

Lexi: This one.

Dustin: This one? And for you, so far?

Adam: I still gotta go with the recumbent one.

Dustin: Okay, all right.

Adam: Only because of my back issues and everything, like.

Dustin: Yep.

Adam: How comfortable it is, just being, just the recumbent and the back combined.

Dustin: Okay, cool.

Adam: I do like that one, though. That's a tier.

Dustin: All right, we got one more, which is our Rickshaw, where you can carry passengers on the back, so, we'll let each of you take a spin with no passenger and then we'll let you put a passenger on the back.

Adam: Good.

Dustin: So this one's going to feel very similar to that one, Lexi. So go ahead. And this is our super max cush with the backrest. So this is an after-market purchase so go ahead and hop on. You can step on the pedal, too, if you need to help you get up.

Lexi: Thank you. I'm just making it harder for myself.

Dustin: Yeah. Okay. So powered on here. So everything's pretty similar other than this one is a pushdown throttle, not a twist throttle. So, yeah, go for it.

Adam: I never even noticed there was a basket underneath the seat.

Dustin: Oh, you know what? Maybe when you were here, there probably wasn't.

Adam: Yeah, that must be new.

Dustin: Yeah.

Lexi: I feel comfy with this one. It's like I've ridden it before.

Dustin: Do you like that one?

Lexi: Yeah, I do.

Dustin: Yeah?

Lexi: Might be a little bit of a bumpy ride with the person behind me, but.

Dustin: Well, here, stay on there. We're going to have Adam get on the back and I want to see if you feel much of a difference with him back there.

Lexi: Cool.

Dustin: Yeah, I can grab this for you. There we go. You should be good with it like that, too. I mean, you don't need to.

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: Tighten it.

Adam: Doesn't need to be too tight. That's fine.

Dustin: All right.

Lexi: Ready?

Adam: All right.

Lexi: Let's rock it.

Adam: You can.

Dustin: There you go.

Adam: Off we go. Faster lad.

Lexi: If I go faster I'm afraid we both might die. That was fun.

Dustin: Could you even really tell that he was back there?

Lexi: Nope.

Dustin: Handling was the same? Steering?

Lexi: Yep. It felt the same.

Dustin: Okay, cool.

Adam: It's like I wasn't even there.

Dustin: All right. Now, Adam, you're gonna move into the driver's seat. Lexi, you can just hang out while he takes one ride without you.

Lexi: Cool.

Dustin: You can go down just a touch. Do you want to put it down a little more?

Adam: I wanted to turn it.

Dustin: Oh. Let's see. Yeah, it's pretty tight, huh?

Adam: Yeah.

Dustin: There we go. Just get up just a touch more straight there is that good?

Adam: Yeah, right there.

Dustin: All right that should work.

Adam: Oh yeah, much better.

Dustin: Oh here, yeah, let me tighten that on.

Lexi: That's so cool. I didn't even notice that was adjustable.

Dustin: Yep.

Adam: Oh, yeah. Oh, the support.

Dustin: Oh, let me get the seatbelt. Sorry.

Adam: Oh, sorry. Get that secured.

Dustin: Yeah.

Adam: Please fasten your seatbelts. All right.

Adam: All right, here we go. And away. I don't want to go crazy with it.

Dustin: You're putting her through the wringer. What do you think?

Adam: Oh, yeah. So great.

Dustin: All right, Lexi, you want to hop on the back?

Lexi: Sure.

Adam: And super comfy with that back support.

Dustin: Yeah, you like that?

Adam: Yeah.

Lexi: Sorry, can I use your shoulder?

Adam: Yeah, go ahead.

Lexi: Gracias.

Adam: Please keep your hands, arms, legs, and feet inside the vehicle at all times. Remain seated, please. Permanecer sentados, por favor. And now, here we go....

Lexi: Now it's my turn to do the princess wave. Except there are no people, oh well.

Adam: And here we go.

Dustin: All right. How was the ride back there?

Adam: Oh, it was so great.

Lexi: I'd rather be back here. Because then I can use both hands to wave.

Dustin: It's comfortable, right?

Lexi: It is.

Adam: Super comfy.

Dustin: Okay, well, we've concluded which one you're going to take up the hill. So Adam, are you sticking with this one right here?

Adam: The recumbent one. Yeah.

Dustin: Okay.

Adam: I got to go with that one.

Dustin: Oh, and Lexi, which is your final choice?

Lexi: I gotta say this one.

Dustin: The Simple Step-Thru. Okay. All right. So we're going to get on these and then we're going to take them on a ride down the street and demonstrate them going up a hill. Push that up keep and then pedal. It should move.

Lexi: Okay. I see how. It's okay.

Dustin: There you go. Cool. All right, how was it?

Lexi: Awesome. A lot of fun. Super easy too.

Dustin: Yeah?

Adam: Yeah, again, didn't have to stand, and had to pedal a bit, but like, it was a good workout.

Dustin: Yeah? But yeah, you're sitting down, you're comfortable.

Adam: Yeah, it's like one of those bikes where you're just like…

Dustin: The recumbent?

Adam: Yeah.

Lexi: It's a lot easier than a regular bike.

Dustin: Yeah. All right, cool. Let's go down now. And we'll get the brakes in action.

Adam: Let's find out.

Lexi: Sweet.

Dustin: So I'll let you lead the way, Adam, and Lexi, you can go next.

Lexi: Okay.

Dustin: All right, how was the downhill?

Adam: I don't know whether it's because of the tricycle or because of the recumbency, but I felt so much more comfortable going faster on this than with the bike.

Lexi: I felt that way with this one, too. It was a lot safer, I felt. And I was like, okay, I'm getting the hang of it. I can turn a little bit faster with more comfort and ease.

Adam: But again, the brakes work perfectly fine.

Dustin: Yep, there you go. Parking brake.

Adam: Beautiful. Parking brake on there.
