The advantages of a forward pedaling e-bike for seniors. Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry. Today, I'm going to talk to you about the advantages of a forward pedaling e-bike for seniors. I've got four e-bikes here that are great for seniors. Now, forward pedaling bikes or e-bikes, what is the concept of that? Is it sort of like a recumbent but not as extreme, right? A recumbent is a full sit-down. You're pedaling all the way out in front of your body. So a forward pedaling bike or e-bike is more or less a recumbent. We would say maybe a semi-recumbent, some variation of a recumbent. So you can see typically on a bike, pedals would generally be directly below the seat. In a forward pedaling design, they are shifted forward. I have four different e-bikes here. On the two outside bikes, the Simple step through, the pedals are shifted forward four inches, on EVRYjourney, they are shifted forward 9 inches, and on the relaxed body, they are shifted forward 14 inches.
Now, what is the advantage of that? Well, when you have the pedals move forward, the seat can be lowered to the ground while riders can still get great leg extension when riding. What's the advantage of having the seat lower to the ground? Well, easier mounting and dismounting, and also better control, and safer stopping. So as opposed to having to raise this seat really high to get you great leg extension, you're going to get it because of the pedals being moved forward. So when you stop, you can quickly and easily get your feet on the ground as opposed to being up on your toes, tilting and wobbling, and being scared or unsteady. Many senior riders love that feature, especially because of how safe it is and how it lowers the center of gravity. Now, you can see you've got different variations, starting with as low as 4 inches as forward pedal, forward pedaling, 9 inches, and 14 inches. And when you move into something like this model.
The Relaxed body here, this is almost a recumbent. We would call it a semi-recumbent where you've got the seat down to 29 inches, and you're pedaling out 14 inches in front of your body. So if you wanna be lower to the ground, and have a more extreme forward pedaling, this is a great option. So it allows you to not be cramped while riding, get nice extensions, and be comfortable, but also adds that element of safety where you don't have to raise the seat, get you high off the ground, and feel unsure when you stop. I see that many times many senior riders like the seat to be lower, so they're lower to the ground and they can safely plant their feet. But then when they do that and they pedal, their legs are cramped. So in this case, you can have that seat lower, get the forward pedaling, and your legs don't have to be cramped.
So you can have the best of both worlds, and you can find the configuration that works best for you. So again, want a low seat to the ground, extreme pedaling, you've got the relaxed body you want, the midway point, nine inches forward, something that still resembles a traditional bicycle, very comfortable with the cruiser bars, go with the EVRYjourney. If you want something with just a little bit of forward pedaling, that still feels fairly upright, the simple step-through would be a good option. So, those are the advantages of a forward pedaling e-bike.
