Do I need to be pedaling to change the pedal assist level on an e-bike? Hey, everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today we're going to answer the question: Do I need to be pedaling to change the pedal assist level on an e-bike? All right, let's say you're thinking about getting an e-bike, or you already have an e-bike, got a lot of controls up here. Sometimes, it can feel confusing or overwhelming. I know. Now, traditionally, when you have gears on your bicycle and the chain has to change, to change the gears, you have to be pedaling for the gears to change. Now, with your pedal assist on your e-bike, you do not have to be pedaling at all. In fact, you can change the assistance level when you're stopped, when you're riding, whenever you would like to. That gives you the flexibility to start in levels one, two, three, and four and change it as you see fit at any point during your ride. So you don't have to be pedaling at all.  In fact, you can be pushing the throttle, changing the pedal assist level, you name it. Now, this is a big difference from gears when on gears on a bike, like I said, you do have to be pedaling while you're changing the gears. Now, you can change the gears on a bike when you're stopped. However, when you start riding, you're going to hear all this crunching and moving because the gears are trying to change to get into place.

With the pedal assist, it's electronic. When you're increasing that pedal assist level, there's nothing moving outside. It's an internal electrical change that signals that the controller is sending to increase or decrease the amount of assistance you're getting from the motor. The beauty of it is that whenever you feel comfortable changing that assistance level, you can do it. If you don't feel comfortable doing it while you ride, get into the assistance level that you want when you're stopped, and then you can start moving and just stay in that assistance level the whole way if that's what works best for you. Now, we have some other videos showing you exactly how to change your pedal assist level on our YouTube channel. If you want to check those out, some more demonstrations and actual riding videos if you want to see those.
