How To Use the Controls on an EBike? Understanding An Electric Bikes Throttle & Pedal Assist

Understanding the controls on an e-bike and how to use them. All right, I got two e-bikes here. Simple Step-Thru 20 inches, 500 watts, 10.4 amp hour battery. Top speeds of 22 and range of up to 50 miles. Also got the Evryjourney here. All right, if you've never been on an electric bike, wondering about the controls and how they operate I'm going to walk you through everything here. Now, if you're looking for other content about me riding e-bikes, and demonstrating, You can check out our YouTube channel. We've got tons of videos on it, but I'm going to bring you in for a close-up and just walk you through the basics of how to use the controls on an e-bike. OK, now. On electric bikes, all are going to have you can come on in closer here and shoot the controls here, so all e-bikes are going to have a pedal assist option. Now there are a couple of different ways the pedal assist can be controlled. There's either usually a separate Controller here, always with a plus and minus, or an up and a down, and a power button. Your power button will turn on your display right here, which turns on the battery and the assistance. Now from here, you turn your assistance level up or down by using either your plus or minus, and the idea is that you can do this with your thumb while you're still holding the grip and riding. So this is just one version of what this may look like. Like I said, it could be a narrower one with an up and a down or another version with a plus or minus actually if you come over here to this bike, you can see again a little bit different configuration. The display is in here with the plus and minus, but you same principle. You just push her up and down. And that sets your pedal assist level. Now, you can change the pedal assist level while you're riding or while you're stopped.

Totally up to you. And you can see again, you can reach your thumb here while you're riding. So you dictate how much assistance you want while you're riding. If you want the least, you can be in one. If you want the most, you can be in five. Now, this right here is a thumb throttle. These work just like a gas pedal on a car. The harder you press it... the more it accelerates. Now, in this case, I have it at zero so the throttle doesn't work. But, if you press it a little, it goes a little. If you press it a lot, it goes a lot. Just like a gas pedal, except you're using your thumb. Now, some e-bikes may have a twist throttle, which is typically located here. This is a twist throttle for the gears of the bike not related to the electric in any way, shape, or form. But, you'll see it sometimes will be a twist throttle and it'll work where you twist it back, you go, twist it forward, and the motor stops giving assistance. So, that is also an option for e-bikes as well. So, you can also see on the display here, that this display is built in. On the other e-bike, the display was located in the middle. And operating these are very easy. Now, as you get used to it, maybe you're not comfortable adjusting the pedal assist while you're riding. You could just put it to a certain level and then get going. And as you get comfortable, it'll get easier and easier to adjust that up and down while you're riding. So it's very basic. You can see there's not a lot in terms of the controls. Now Let's come back to this e-bike for a second. On all the displays. You are gonna see most of your battery life, your miles per hour, your assistance level, and of course an odometer. And as I said, it's quite basic. You've got the up and down, the power, and you've got your throttle. And once you start pedaling, the motor will kick in. If you don't want to pedal, you'll simply push this throttle and you can start moving.

So if you've never ridden an e-bike and you're apprehensive or feeling scared at all about doing it, operating the controls is easy. I promise you'll pick it up quickly.
