Reverse E Trike or Conventional E Trike? What's the Difference Between These Electric Tricycles

What's the difference between a standard electric trike and a reverse electric trike?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today I'm going to explain to you what the difference between a standard e-trike is and a reverse electric trike. Okay so right here I've got the easy transit foldable electric trike and right here I've got the easy transit reverse foldable electric trike. So what's the difference? Well, the standard easy transit has two wheels in the rear like a conventional trike, and one wheel in the front. Now, the reverse trike has two wheels in the front and one wheel in the back. Now, a lot of major differences. Now, you can have a reverse trike. So we've done a lot of sampling here at sixthreezero, testing out different styles of reverse trike. There's a lot of, you know, people saying things out there that a reverse trike is more stable. It turns out better. Now, that is true if you have the correct type of steering. Like we have here, where it's the front wheels can lean and shift. OK, now we've also done samples of reverse trikes where the front wheels are stable or they don't tilt and they're very difficult to drive and more risky. I shouldn't even say that because conventional trikes aren't risky, but more apt to tip than a conventional trike.

If the front wheels don't tilt on a reverse trike, they're very finicky, very difficult to turn, and they're just not, in my opinion, very easy to ride. If you are going to ride one, you're mainly going to want to go straight, and that's it, and turning is going to be very slow and very controlled. Now, on this reverse trike, you can see we have the ability or the wheels have this axle that leans, right? Now, the thing about that is, that it makes it so you can run a little bit of a hill here. Now. It can balance on its own, but we do have a kickstand back here. I can put the kickstand up, okay so it can balance on its own, but because the wheels tilt, if you kind of move it, it can tip over on its own. Like so, right? So we can put this kickstand down here. Now what makes that different from a standard conventional trike is it's going to stay on its own no matter what, right? It's going to balance. The rider has to do nothing to get this trike to balance. On this reverse trike with this type of steering, you can't just sit here and balance. Now, when you get moving, the rider also is going to need to steer in order to keep the trike balanced, right? If you have zero ability to steer at all, a reverse trike with this type of steering is probably not a great option for you. Now, there are other reverse trikes that, again, don't have the tilting steering. For those, they are probably going to be about as equal as stable as with two wheels in the back, but the steering is going to be more challenging because you're going to be steering the two front wheels, which is going to require more effort versus steering the singular front wheel, which is going to be more nimble. Now, on this type of reverse trike also, you need to get moving for it to balance, right? So having the two front wheels is going to make balancing easier, but the rider is going to have to keep the handlebars in the direction that you want to go. Now, with that said, it's going to corner and turn much smoother, and it's going to ride more like a two-wheel bike than the conventional two-wheel in the back.

But again, at all times, as you sit on this e-trike, on the EZ Transit, at all times, you're going to be balanced. On the Reverse Trike with this tilting steering, you will not be balanced at all times, even when you're at a standstill. So when you get on, your feet have to be planted to balance, and then to get going, you got to start pedaling like so, okay? And now you can see it's easy to balance when you're up and moving, and having the two front wheels helps quite a bit. And you can see how narrow of a turn I can even take on this. I mean, this rides essentially like a two-wheel bike. And the two front wheels just give you that added balance. It's fun and nice. But it's just important to recognize what your level of balance is, what you're capable of and not capable of. And what you need out of your trike. Now I can just show you very simply, if I sit on the EZ Transit right here, right, I can just sit here, it stays completely balanced. Now, my turning radius, I'm gonna have to take turns much slower on a conventional tricycle versus a two-front wheel tricycle. You wanna make sure you ease into the turns and accelerate out of the turns. And on the two-front-wheel trike, you can head into turns much quicker and you can lean into the turns on the two front wheels with the leaning steering. On a conventional trike, you're going to want to lean your body weight against the turn to make sure you keep all wheels on the ground. So different premises, they ride a little bit differently. If you're somebody who wants to have three wheels and still go fast and feel nimble, reverse trike is a really good option. If you just want to have something for stability and you want to make sure you've got those three wheels on the ground, opt for the easy transit or something with two wheels in the back. Now, if you want to see different riding videos for each of these, you can look on our YouTube channel. I've done a whole video on the reverse trike, watching me ride and how nimble it is.

I've also got a lot of videos on the easy Transit. And if you have any other questions at all, please reach out to us at theteam@sixthreezero.com or call us at 310-982-2877.
