250, 500 watts, or 750 watts? What's the right motor size on an e-trike?

Hey everyone, I'm Dustin. I have nearly 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry and today I'm gonna talk to you about electric trike motor sizes, 250, 500, or 750 and what is the right motor size for you. The EZ Transit and the EvryJourney electric tricycle from sixthreezero. All right. So, there's a lot of e-trikes out there right now, 250, 500, 750, I see even 1000 and above, which those are gonna be specifically for off-road riding. Now, a 250-watt, a 500, 750, those are gonna be street legal that you can take in the bike lane and go on rides with you. Now, what size is right for you? Now, I think the general feeling is a lot of people should opt for the largest motor size that is out there. Now, I don't feel that way. As an example, the EvryJourney electric trike has a 250-watt front hub motor. And what's great about that is it gives you just enough assistance while you pedal to make riding that much easier.

So if you want to maybe step up from a traditional trike to an electric trike, it's a good jump to make because it's not so much power that's overwhelming. But it's just enough where if you still want to pedal assist and ride around a community or a neighborhood, it's great. And you still have a big basket in the back. The other benefit of this particular e-trike is you have an ergonomic upright riding position, which is going to keep your back upright, ergonomic, and comfortable while you're riding. Now, again, don't think 250 is not enough power. We have lots of videos. You can check them on our YouTube channel. Riders over 300 pounds. Riding this around town, and they're perfectly comfortable and able to make that journey. And like I said, it doesn't accelerate too fast where it jolts the rider or keeps you off guard. So if you're under 200 pounds, this is more than enough in all situations. And if you're over 200 pounds on flat ground, it'll do just fine. And you have a throttle and pedal assist as well. Now, jumping to 500 watt and 750 watt. If you're going to get into a lot of hills and you are a heavier rider, let's say over 200 pounds or over 250 pounds, then you're going to want something maybe with a little bit bigger motor. Or if you want to go fast, as an example, the 250 is going to top out at about 15 miles an hour. Something with a larger motor like 750 watts, you can get usually from 16 to 20 miles an hour.

We regulate ours down to 16 miles an hour so riders aren't being dangerous or getting carried away with riding or getting, you know not carried away with writing but aren't riding too fast on a tricycle. So it's still safe for them so 750-watt trikes are great. Like on our rickshaw, if you want to bring passengers or you're taking on a lot of hills, or if you're a heavier rider, or if you want to try to get up to 20 miles an hour on an e-trike, then you're going to want that 750 watts of power to give you that power while you're out riding. Also, if you're gonna carry heavy loads, 20, 50, or 100 pounds on your e-trike, then maybe look at 750 watts. So don't always think you have to opt for the largest motor. Think about what's best for you and your riding habits. Also, there are many things to consider like the design, the style, and the available accessories, As an example, you can have the bags in the rear basket here. You can have a front basket on here and, a rear basket. So there's lots and lots of options and different styles. So also don't think about price, just think about motor size. So that's something to pay attention to as well. The other thing I'll say is generally when you go up in motor size, you're gonna have to go up in battery size. Now I'm just noticing there are no batteries on either of these as well, but that's gonna drive the cost up generally.

Types of Motors in an Electric Trike

If you are keen on riding Etrikes, you must be aware that the electric tricycle motor size comes in different types. Moreover, these types of motors bring their own benefits in power, efficiency, and handling. As a result, they help you ride better on various roads. So, here are a few types of motors you should know about.

1. Mid-Drive Motors: It is located near the pedals of the trike. They power the pedals directly, making them efficient and great for hills. They also use the trike’s gears to help you get the best performance.
2. Chain-Driven Motors: These types of motors use a chain to transfer power to the rear wheel. Moreover, they are effective but bit as common in trikes.
3. Belt-Driven Motors: Instead of chain, Belt-Driven Motors use a belt to transform power. Hence, they are quieter and need less upkeep compared to chain-driven motors.
4. Geared Hub Motors: They have internal gears, which help with torgue and efficiency at low speeds. As a result, they are useful for trikes that need extra power  for starting and climbing hills.
5. Direct-Driven Hub Motors: It does not have gears and provides a simple power transfer. Due to this reason, they are usually quieter and more reliable but might not be as efficient at low speeds.

Choosing the right motor for your Etrike is important for a great riding experience. So, learning about the different motors will help you to make a smart choice while buying an electric bike.

Diverse Motor Sizes in Electric Tricycle

Knowing about motor size on an Electric Trike will help you achieve the best performance. Each size affects how fast you can go, how far you can travel, and how comfortable you are. So, here are some electric tricycle motor sizes you should know about.

1. 250 Watts Motor: This motor size is good for easy and flat riding in the city. Moreover, it is great for casual rides and short trips. Thus, it is perfect if you don’t need a lot of power.
2. 500 Watts Motor: Good for everyday rides, small hills, and city travels. Furthermore, it offers a nice mix of power and efficiency. Not only this, it gives a bit of more power and handles different types of terrain better.
3. 750 Watts Motor: It is stronger and faster, making this motor good for steep hills and more difficult rides. Apart from this, 750 Watts Motor provides better acceleration and can handle more varied types of surfaces.
4. 1,000 Watts Motor: It’s a very powerful motor that is perfect for tough terrain and fast speeds. Besides, this motor is great for heavy use and challenging rides, including steep hills.
5. 1500+ Watts Motor: This motor is powerful for the most demanding and most difficult rides. Moreover, it can handle very steep hills and rough surfaces. As a result, it is ideal for high-performing riding requirements.

Picking up the right motor size on an Electric Trike makes a big difference. Furthermore, it will also help you to enjoy a better ride, with the right speed and distance as per your riding requirements.

Also, so on a 250-watt 10.4 amp hour battery is more than sufficient. If you're going for a fat tire like our rickshaw 750 watts, then you want a battery that's at least 14 amp hours or 21 amp hours.
