How a 3-Speed Internal Hub Actually Works
Most people assume "3-speed" means the same mechanics as a 7- or 21-speed bike, just with fewer options. It doesn't. A 3-speed sixthreezero uses an internal hub, where all three gears live sealed inside the rear wheel hub itself, rather than on an exposed derailleur and cassette. When you shift, a small planetary gear system inside the hub changes your pedaling ratio — there's no chain jumping between sprockets, no derailleur to bend, and nothing exposed to road grime, sand, or rain.
This is why 3-speed riders notice two things immediately: shifting works even when you're stopped at a red light (something a derailleur bike can't do), and the drivetrain stays cleaner for longer. The trade-off is range — three gears can't match the climbing range of a 7- or 21-speed cassette. If your route has even one gentle slope, or you commute 2+ miles regularly, the 3-speed earns its slightly higher price with real everyday flexibility. If your rides are strictly flat and short, the single speed is the lower-maintenance, lower-cost choice.
Is a 3-Speed Bike Good for Hills?
Short answer: for gentle to moderate inclines, yes. For steep or sustained climbs, no — that's what our 7-speed EVRYjourney models are built for.
A 3-speed internal hub typically spaces its gears wide enough to give you one "cruising" gear, one lower gear for a mild uphill push, and one higher gear for a downhill or tailwind stretch. This works well for the kind of hills you find on a coastal ride, a park path, or a neighborhood with rolling (not steep) terrain. What it won't do well is handle a sustained, steep climb — the gear range simply isn't wide enough, and you'll find yourself standing on the pedals sooner than you would on a wider-range bike.
